Diet/Nutritional Requirements
San Joaquin Kit Foxes are carnivores and amongst one of the most carnivorous of all foxes. Although their general diet consists of rodents, hares, and squirrels, there are geographic and seasonal variations that affect their diet. Kangaroo rats and different types of mice are found in the Southern part of their habitat range. Squirrels, black-tailed hares, ground-nesting birds, and various insects are also food sources from this area. White-footed mice are found alongside the species listed above are found in the central range of their habitats. In the Northern area, their prey consists of cottontails, black-tailed hares, pocket mice, and kangaroo rats.
