Range & Habitat
The San Joaquin Kit Foxes are predominantly found in the San Joaquin County of California, and their habitat goes as far as Southern Kern County. They live in chaparral, temperate grasslands, and chaparral biomes because of the minimal amount of trees and higher amounts of shrub- like plants to hide their dens. These kit foxes make their dens by digging small holes into the ground, thus they require a habitat with loose-textile soil to create these dens. Dens are used for shelter to care and protect their young and are sites for reproduction. When unable to make suitable dens, they modify other animals’ dens. Because location is important for building suitable dens, they are confined to specific locations and cannot travel elsewhere.
